Get a Passport in a Pinch
Published Monday, December 7th 2015 - Updated Monday, December 7th 2015Perhaps you plan to travel in the next few weeks and just realized that your passport has expired, or perhaps you just found a great travel deal and don't have a passport. Regardless, don't stress it. Here's how to go about getting a passport right away.
Expedited Service
By requesting expedited service, you can have your new passport in hand in approximately three weeks. If there is an urgent need for a passport, you can get your passport even quicker. This service costs approximately $60, in addition to the cost of the passport, as well as possible delivery costs. To apply for expedited service, you can do so either by mail or in person. Make note, if you are getting a passport for the first time or your passport has been lost or stolen, you must apply in person. There are several options for applying in person, so head to one of the following:
- United States Department of State Passport Agency
- Authorized Passport Acceptance Facility
- This may include post offices, public libraries, and clerks of court
- Passport Expeditor or Courier Company
- This option can be more expensive than the others since you're paying a third party
Same Day Passport
It is possible to get a "same day" passport from a passport agency, but you need to go to one of the regional centers. Just to name a few- Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Miami, Seattle, and San Francisco all have regional passport agencies. Make sure to make an appointment, have your passport photos ready, and have all of the proper documentation for getting a passport filled out. It will take three to five hours to get your new passport.
Life or Death Emergency
If you have a dire emergency and need to travel, contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778. To reach someone outside of regular business hours, call 202-647-4000.
