Top Cruise Destinations for Shopping
Published Friday, April 15th 2016Regardless of your destination, going on a cruise offers a wide selection of activities and places to see. However, if you love shopping, then there are some destinations that are much better known for this pastime than others. Below you will find the best cruise destinations for shopping.
St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
St. Thomas is home to hundreds of duty-free shops. More than 400 duty-free shops are located in downtown Charlotte Amalie, which is the capital of the Virgin Islands. Another area, Havensight, which is often where the cruise ships dock, is just two miles east of Charlotte Amalie. Havensight Mall, as well as a variety of other shops and boutiques, is located here. St. Thomas is known for its selection of jewelry, crystal, china, perfume, watches, and cameras.
St. Maarten/St. Martin
Another great cruise destination for shopping is St. Maarten (the Dutch side of the island) and St. Martin (the French side of the island). The best shopping can be found in Phillipsburg, the capital on the Dutch side. Here you can find great deals on cameras, watches, crystal, linen, and electronics. In fact, prices can be as much as 30% to 40% lower than in the United States. If you are looking for perfume or fashion wear, then you should head to the French side of the island.
The Dominican Republic
In the Dominican Republic, you can buy amber, which is from the Dominican mines, as well as purchase larimar, a semiprecious gemstone that is pale blue in color. Remember, it is best to buy them in reputable stores. You can also find Dominican rocking chairs, which make a wonderful reminder of your time spent in the Caribbean. Also, Santo Domingo is a great area for shopping where you will find a number of souvenir stands, as well as malls.
